Can someone please explain the WBC scheduling to me?

I thought the in each pool played each other, then the top team moved on. I guess I was wrong because the US played Canada once, Venezuela twice, hasn't played Italy at all, and I believe their next game is against Puerto Rico. Will they even play Italy? How is their schedule decided? How many 1st rd games do they play? Thanks.
