I can't get my 9mo old to sleep in his crib and I'm against the CIO method!?

My 9 mo old son will go to sleep at 8pm in his crib but then wakes up about an hour later and absolutely will not go back to sleep unless he's in my arms or in the bed with us. I love snuggling with him but hate going to bed at 9 every night! Right now he is in his crib screaming his head off and its killing me! I'm going to go get him but what can I do to make him sleep???
